TP's musical aspirations through style and sound

Posted by KENJO in Untagged

TP The ProblemSince he was 12 years old, Tyrone Perry, aka TP The Problem has had a strong interest in music. Whether he's writing a hip-hop track, recording an R&B song or performing a club banger, TP considers himself a dedicated artist. "My music is real music," he said. "[It's] something you can listen and relate to. It's strictly me."

Who knew playing a video game would lead to something better for TP? According to him, this was the start of his musical desire. He and close friend Dajuan Mack began recording beats on a Playstation 2 video game. "We downloaded instrumentals and began rapping to the beats while we recorded ourselves with a tape recorder." Though this was the beginning, he faced challenges that helped him find ways to overcome hardships.

January 2009, his cousin passed away. "Music became an extreme importance after my cousin pasted away," he said. "Before he passed, he told me that I could do anything I set my mind to. He always believed in me and pushed me to do any and everything I wanted to." Though challenging, TP moved on and went back to music. That was when he recorded his track "Freak You." The song fueled his desire to keep pushing his musical boundaries.

TP The Problem

Summer 2009 he met with Money in the Bag Entertainment C.E.O., D$. "We put out our first singles [together] called ‘Turnt Up' and ‘Hang Over,'" he said.

Besides remaining busy with Money in the Bag Ent., he's also involved with his own upcoming mixtape "Hitman." TP said he's excited for this and his Money in the Bag Ent., mixtape "Break Bread or Play Dead" to be released because they represent his music style.

As much as he loves making his own music, he listens to other artists to gain inspiration. Artists like Nas, Too Short, Eminem and Tupac left him determined to create his own music – thoughts and meanings he was feeling. He said these rappers are what he considers "stand out" rappers. TP said he falls under his own category of style and sound as well. "In my music you won't get anything different than ‘TP,'" he said.

Though young in the music business, his peers recognized his determination. TP appeared on the recent BrandKnew Radio mixtape by DJ Kenjo LaChapelle, titled "On Air." "How I became part of the mixtape was that I'd previously spoken to Kenjo about a collaboration," he said. "He hit me with the idea of the mixtape and we made it happen." Besides helping with LaChapelle's group mixtape, TP said he enjoys BrandKnew Radio's family of artists. According to him, the online radio station has helped TP out immensely. "It's a real radio station, and by ‘real' I mean an uncut, in-your-face radio station. Over all, I think BrandKnew radio is one of the best radio station's out there."

For TP, music is a continuous process. He considers it a craft and said he only wants to grow throughout his years. "I'm serious about what I do," he said. "I want this and I want the people to enjoy it."

Artistic hope through music: Divine Charle'nee

Posted: Aug 10, 2010 | |Share

Singer/songwriter Divine Charle'nee is set to release her debut Soul/R&B single "Ride with Me" off Island Def Jam Digital Distribution's label Sept. 1. According to her, she's excited for her release and loves R&B music, but said, "Music is more than a gender." According to her, music is about connecting with all genres and bringing the love of it all to the forefront.

When Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Nipsy Russel and Ted Ross premiered in the movie "The Wiz" in 1978, Charle'nee was just getting interested in entertainment. "When I started out I was five years old and I loved to dance," she said. "I would do shows. [One of the shows I remember] is performing ‘The Wiz' for my elementary school." Performing was important to her at an early age.

Charle'nee

By the time she was in her early teenage years, Charle'nee began writing songs. "I remember sitting down and just wishing I could rap like The Sugarhill Gang and I loved New Edition," she said. "That's when I started really feeling music." Throughout the 1980s music remained important to her. She said the "original hip-hop movement" fueled her inspiration.

Throughout her childhood and teenage years, Charle'nee found strength through music. However, it wasn't until 1991 when she knew music was the direction she wanted to follow. "I was in a group called the Black Onyx and then we shortened it to the B. Girlz," she said. "[Around that time] Mary J. Blige came around. She was and still is one of my mentors. I love her style of music and fashion." Besides Blige, Charle'nee finds inspiration in other artists and groups from the 1990s, including TLC, Boyz II Men, Aaliyah, Missy Elliot and Faith Evans. She said these artists remain important to her today.

In 1994, Charle'nee released her debut album called "Da Flow." The album was one of two Gospel album releases. (Her second album "Love" released in 2002.) "I was a Christian Gospel rapper," she said. "I did a lot of marketing on the West Coast – from small and large venue performances, to hitting Gospel radio stations," she said. "I did all of the footwork putting my music in stores." For Charle'nee, the importance of promotion was to reach people through her music.

Besides spreading the word about her sound, she also focused on reminding others to give. Charle'nee said charity was important to her and remains important to this day. "I want people to know I'm a giver," she said. "This is what I love doing. Music reminds me of such love."

Charle'nee felt several inner accomplishments, but one she continues to feel today involves her albums. She said speaking of radio stations, "They still play my Gospel music today."

Today, Charle'nee is ready to widen her audience with her upcoming album "My Body - I Want U." When asked about her thoughts on "Ride with Me" she said, "I didn't want the song at first. I didn't know what my Gospel fans would think. I prayed about it."

Charle'nee is excited about her upcoming release and takes pride in its sincerity. "I don't use profanity in my lyrics," she said. "I don't freestyle. I write stories and poems and I want people to relate to them." An example of the truth behind her writing can be heard on "Ride with Me." According to her, she had someone in mind when she wrote the song.

Charle'nee

Throughout her life, Charle'nee's had time to reflect on her future. Music is her passion and said she will always dedicate her love to her daughter and two sons. "My youngest son is autistic," she said. "He is nonverbal. Whatever I can do to help him and all of my children, that's where my heart is. I want to help through my music."

Divine Charle'nee will release her upcoming album "My Body – I Want U" on Island Def Jam Digital Distribution. Her single "Ride with Me" will be sold throughout digital outlets including Rhapsody, iTunes, MySpace, Amazon and TuneCore.

Hip-Hop artist's rise above struggles: Mr. Infamy's triumph

Posted by KENJO in Untagged

Hip-Hop artist's rise above struggles: Mr. Infamy's triumph

written by Christina Chaffin

Anthony Goodwyn, aka Mr. Infamy, began freestyle rapping when he was in 2nd grade. The Newark, New Jersey native enjoyed creating rhymes, but kept his talent hidden until reaching 7th grade. When he realized listeners appreciated his musical talent, he said he decided to start writing lyrics.

In 2000, Goodwyn was a sophomore in high school. Though young, he began writing deep lyrics. "I was going through a change in life," he said. "I was separated from my siblings and mother, so I [didn't want] to be in school." Goodwyn said he was rebellious in school, but stayed focused on music.

Three years later, he moved to Boston to broaden his horizons in music. Goodwyn began working with the group O.S.A. (One Step Ahead.) "We released a few mixtapes that got us some gigs, but never released an official album," he said. The group dismantled in 2005, but Goodwyn said he wasn't quitting. For him, music became a positive aspect in his life

Though he and the rest of O.S.A. were no longer making music as a group, they remained connected. Goodwyn began working with band member Rev Ruger. Together, they became known as the Da Hoodfellas. Their partnership was strong, but ended abruptly. "We released ‘Newark's Most Wanted the Mixtape' fall 2006, but shortly after 2007, Rev ran into some legal issues," he said. "That forced us to stop distributing [the mixtape.]" The project was on hold, but Goodwyn continued writing and rapping.

Summer 2007 he created infamytv.com. "I teamed up with [a friend named] Frankie Filth and started recording new material," Goodwyn said. "We released ‘Eyez of an Artist Mixtape.'" Goodwyn said Filth produced the mixtape. A year later the two reunited to work on Goodwyn's next release, "A Man on a Mission Mixtape." His next release, "The Art of Bars Mixtape" was issued in 2009. Both Ruger and Goodwyn worked together on the project.

Goodwyn said a large portion of his life revolves around music and doesn't plan on stopping. He said feedback inspires him to continue following his dreams. "The reaction I get from people when I tell them what I'm doing, or if I release a new song – [it's inspiring,]" he said. "All feedback is good, whether they like the songs or not." Goodwyn said he appreciates criticism and requests honesty from those who listen to his music.

Besides creating music, Goodwyn's other aspirations revolve around his family – specifically his children. He said their simplicity inspires him to make them proud. "My family and close friends may not always agree with the moves I make or some of my songs, but they always support me," he said. "My kids are a huge support. They don't care about fame. They just like to hear ‘daddy's' voice."

Being signed to a major label is appealing to Goodwyn, but said he enjoys being an independent artist. "I don't need the fame," he said. He said his plan is to tour overseas in the future.

Goodwyn recently released his latest mixtape, "No Holds Bar," produced by Filth. The release includes collaborations with the underground artists SinCity, T-Subb, Rayjozz and Staxx. By fall he plans on issuing another mixtape titled "The Anti-DepressAnt."

For Goodwyn, music is fulfilling, but said support from fans humbles him and inspires him to keep moving forward. He said, "Thank you for this opportunity to share my journey and experiences with you. Salute."

Radio DJ With Dreams: KENJO

Posted by KENJO in Untagged

Thank you Christina Chaffin

Radio DJ with dreams: Kenjo LaChapelle

DAYTON, Ohio – Inspiration comes in many forms. For Kenjo LaChapelle, inspiration is found in entertainment. LaChapelle hosts his own radio show, the "Kenjo Show" on BrandKnew Radio. He's also a hip-hop artist, constantly working on his craft. LaChapelle's goal is to give listeners the perfect groove-music Monday-Friday, 6-9 p.m. PST / 9 p.m.-12 a.m. EST. "I want listeners to know I'm here for them," he said, "I love to receive feedback, shout outs, and just [let others know that I know] they're out there."

LaChapelle's passion for entertainment began at an early age during his elementary school years, when he was placed in the program G.A.T.E., (Gifted and Talented Education.) Acting became his passion. He said he loved exciting people and making them smile. "[While in school] I was always doing something to gain attention," he said. As time passed, his desire to act grew, but slowed down after reaching high school. It was there he discovered a new ambition: music.

Music became LaChapelle's craving, giving him a hobby to look forward to. He said music became his pastime, but didn't take it serious until experiencing personal suffering. That's when creating meaningful lyrics became important. LaChapelle said he wanted listeners to find their own meanings in his words. "I pride myself in telling an intelligent story – both life-based and relatable," he said.

Besides making music, he listens to a variety of artists, who he said influenced him musically. Tribe Called Quest, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim and Tupac are four of many artists he appreciates. These artists and more have challenged his drive to make top-notch music. Still, they don't define his sound. When creating music, he said his goal is to sound original. LaChapelle strives to give fans unique lyrics with a fresh sound.

New artists like Khalifa, J. Coles and Nipsey Hussel are another source of inspiration for LaChapelle. These artists motivate him because according to him, they are "hungry and making it."

Today LaChapelle is determined to inspire others with a variety of music by hosting his own radio show. Though the "Kenjo Show" is in the "developmental stage," said LaChapelle, it's a show he's very passionate about, and said he is thankful others enjoy it. "Tell me what songs you love [and] hate," he said. "Tell me what songs to add to and delete from the rotation. It's not just about ‘Kenjo' on my show. It's about [everyone.]"

Though he's busy with the "Kenjo Show," he loves his work. Music is LaChapelle's inspiration and said he is determined to grow throughout the creative process. He's gearing up to release his new mixtape "On Air" and is currently working on his sophomore album, soon-to-be titled. His previous album "Notepad" is available on iTunes.

His lyrics are genuine and his message is real. "Never give up and believe in yourself." LaChapelle has been taking his advice since he discovered his love for entertainment. Today, he is working toward making his own dreams come true, saying, "Help me grow and I promise I will never let you down."

Think about it, the breath you take, someday can always be taken away
It’s a blessing just to see, the morning of another day.
